Our Oceans are Filled with Plastic: Time to Fix This

A discussion with marine biologist Dr. Rikki Nielsen.
1

Just like the other 65 million American households that include dogs, Kati and I take Rev, our 14-year old lab/border collie, for his twice-daily constitutional walk. When we are in Vero Beach, FL, one of the walks is usually on our great beach where Rev loves jumping into the waves and chasing birds (which he never catches) and crabs (which he sometimes catches). Over the years we have noticed a disturbing increase of plastic on our beach. We and other regularly remove it but it seems like and endless supply. The real problem is that plastic ultimately decays into microplastic which creates untold damage to the marine life our planet depends on.

Today I am unpacking this issue with my guest on the Locally Grown Podcast, Dr. Rikki Eriksen , a marine biologist focused on the health of our oceans. She grew up in Florida, living on the water with the amazing marine wildlife. Summers were spent on a sailboat in Denmark with her grandparents and winter school breaks sailing in the Caribbean. As a teenager, she started noticing the marine ecosystem was choking to death and that she had to do something about it. Please listen so we can all start to do our part to solve this problem, which starts with consumers.
